Laser Dental Technology

When someone mentions lasers, it’s hard not to think of science fiction — Luke Skywalker using a laser sword to defeat Darth Vadar or Captain Picard ordering his crew to set phasers (which are like lasers, but phased) to “stun.” But the real world of laser dental technology is much more complicated and interesting. Lasers contained in fiber optic cables that stretch through thousands of miles of oceans transfer information via the internet between international communities, and every time you set foot in a retail store, workers use them to keep track of thousands of product simultaneously. In the world of dental technology, this is no different. Lasers are being used everyday to offer patients the safest and most effective treatments available.

Innovative Technologies using Lasers for Dentistry

How Does Laser Dental Technology Work?

Laser is actually an acronym for “light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation.” All lasers are created by amplifying an energy component and concentrating that energy with a specialized component like a lens. Approved for use in dentistry since 1994, dental lasers can either work directly as a beam of light or energize water through a process known as hydrokinetics to create a beam powerful enough to remove tissue. In this way, the laser can act as a cutting instrument or vaporizer that can reduce the need for anesthesia and improve tissue recovery times.

What Are the Benefits of Laser Dentistry?

Using laser dental technology to treat complications like gum disease and peri-implantitis can provide patients with treatment options that are less invasive, and more comfortable. Some of the major benefits include:
  • Scalpel-free option — Laser dental treatments often replace more traditional procedures involving incisions and sutures.
  • Comfort — Laser dental procedures produce no friction heat which reduces the need for anesthesia.
  • Promotes tissue regeneration — Because procedures like LANAP operate at a specialized frequency, it can reduce damage done to healthy gum tissue, promoting better healing.

LANAP & LAPIP Procedures

Dr. Vikas Bhasin is committed to using the most advanced equipment available to give his patients the best treatment options. The PerioLase MVP-7 is an Nd:YAG laser, capable of delivering high amounts of energy at a specific website in very controlled bursts. This makes it capable of effectively treating gum disease and peri-implantitis in a minimally-invasive way. Using the PerioLase MVP-7, Dr. Vikas Bhasin offers both LANAP & LAPIP procedures.

LANAP

Short for Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure, LANAP uses a specialized laser to target and eliminate bacteria and infected tissue that causes periodontal disease. As gum disease becomes more advanced, bacteria can burrow deep into periodontal pockets near a tooth’s root. Traditional treatment generally includes making an incision along the gum line to access these pockets, increasing recovery time and pain. The PerioLase MVP-7, which is about the thickness of three human hairs, can slip between teeth and vaporize bacteria and infected tissue without the need for an incision.

LAPIP

Peri-implantitis is the number one cause of dental implant failure. Similar to gum disease, peri-implantitis is caused by a bacterial infection above and below the gum line. Early stages can generally be treated with a deep cleaning in which a dentist scrapes away plaque buildup below the gum line and finishes with a rinse. More advanced stages requires a gum line incision and anesthesia. Using dental technology, a dentist can do this without the need for a scalpel, promoting healthy tissue regrowth and protecting a patient’s dental implant investment.
