How Does LANAP Work?

Short for Laser-Assisted New Attachment Procedure, LANAP gives Dr. Vikas Bhasin the tools he needs to remove infected gum tissue and eliminate bacteria deep within the gums without a scalpel.

Gum disease at its root is a bacterial infection which causes tissue to become inflamed. Because of this response, bacteria can become caught deep within the gums in an area called the periodontal pockets. Using the PerioLase MVP-7, which operates at a specific wavelength that can target disease without harming healthy tissue, Dr. Bhasin can encourage healthy tissue to begin regenerating.

Have your gums become red and puffy? Are they receding? Are your teeth loose or moving? Gum disease doesn’t only affect your mouth, it can increase your chances of heart disease, cancer, and diabetes. If you’re concerned about gum disease, please call (02) 4655-3705 or email reception@camdendental.com.au today for an appointment.

The Prevalence of Gum Disease

According to data from the Australian Dental Association (ADA), the rate of periodontitis (serious gum disease) has not decreased in Australia in the last 30 years, despite advances in oral hygiene. About 20% of Australian adults have periodontitis (defined as pocket depth of >4mm), with 7% having severe periodontitis (defined as a pocket depth of ≥ 6mm). The rate of periodontitis increases with age, affecting almost 40% of Australians age 55 and older.
LANAP is a powerful procedure for treating periodontitis, including severe periodontitis.

Should You Consider LANAP?

Traditional treatment for advanced gum disease generally includes a surgical procedure in which a dentist or periodontist peels back gum tissue for access to the periodontal pocket, removes infected tissue and hard deposits, and then sutures the periodontal pocket to decrease depth. While this treatment has been used for decades, and has proven effective, it can come with long recovery time, and can even change the shape of your gums, exposing your the roots of your teeth and causing sensitivity.

Laser dental technology is fast becoming the future of dentistry. LANAP specifically can give patients affected by advanced gum disease a second chance at great oral health. There are several advantages to choosing the LANAP procedure, which include:
  • No incisions, scalpels, or sutures required
  • Improved recovery time
  • Less pain during the procedure and recovery
  • Treatment can be completed in few appointments
Treating advanced gum disease as soon as possible is important to maintaining the health and structure of your mouth. LANAP can provide you with a much more palatable option compared to traditional gum surgery. It has been proven to provide fantastic long-term results.

In fact, LANAP offers something traditional gum treatment doesn’t: it can regenerate gums and bone tissue. The PerioLase MVP-7 has been shown to stimulate periodontal pocket tissue to begin regeneration, strengthening the periodontal ligament which holds teeth in place. As technology continues to advance, patients deserve more available options that can provide them with the type of treatment they’re comfortable with.
